DELAND, Fla. – Junior catcher Deon Stafford, Jr., was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in, but five-run third inning ultimately sent the Saint Joseph’s baseball team down to a 6-2 defeat at Stetson on Friday night at Melching Field.

With one out in the bottom of the third, Stetson (5-5) put its first runner on base of the night and advanced him to second on a sacrifice bunt.  After an infield single put runners on the corners with two away, Jorge Arenas singled to score the game’s first run.  Mike Spooner and Jack Gonzalez followed with an RBI single and an RBI double, respectively, before a two-run triple by Austin Bogart made it a 5-0 game.

Saint Joseph’s (0-7) answered in the top of the fifth, as Peter Sitaras and Marc Giacalone drew back-to-back one-out walks.  Stafford followed with a single to score Sitaras and get the Hawks on the scoreboard.

Consecutive doubles in the sixth by Kirk Sidwell and Colton Lightner restored the five-run margin for the Hatters.

After a walk and a single put runners on first and third with two outs, Stafford reached on an infield single to score Taylor Boyd and cut the deficit to four.  Cal Jadacki then walked to load the bases, but Joey Gonzalez came on for Stetson to record the final out for his second save of the season.

Brooks Wilson earned the win for the Hatters, tossing six innings and allowing one run on three hits and six walks.  Tim Brennan took the loss for SJU, allowing six runs on nine hits in six innings.  He also struck out six without allowing a walk.

The Hawks will meet Western Michigan on Saturday as the Westin Lake Mary Stetson Invitational continues.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
