MEDIA, Pa. The Saint Joseph’s men’s tennis team bounced back from a tough match 24 hours earlier to beat Delaware, 6-1, at the Springton Indoor Tennis Club on Saturday night. The Hawks took control early with three doubles victories and kept the momentum rolling through singles play, taking five of the six flights.

“A good victory over a solid regional opponent demonstrated what a restful day can do for the mental stamina of our players,” head coach Ian Crookenden said.

Junior Peter Dewitt and sophomore Tim Stierle got things started with a 6-2 win in the first doubles flight. Senior Kyle Chalmers teamed with sophomore Dan Tan for a 6-3 victory in the second flight, while seniors Tristan Boustany and Valentijn van Erven won by the same score in the third.

The Hawks took three singles matches in straight sets to secure the team result. Sophomore Andre Fick was a 7-5, 7-5 winner in the second flight, Dewitt took a 6-4, 6-4 decision in the fourth, and van Erven claimed a 7-5, 6-1 victory in the sixth.

Chalmers and freshman Beekman Schaeffer came away with three-set victories as well; Chalmers won 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 in the first, while Schaeffer posted a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 triumph in the fifth.

“Energetic, and with sound mental stamina and concentration, our players withstood a strong challenge from a well-coached rival,” Crookenden said. “It was a very good way for us to close out the indoor segment of our season and start looking forward to outdoor play.”

The Hawks will take two weeks off from match play before resuming their schedule on March 11 at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina.
