BRONX, N.Y. – Senior Jimmy Daniels capped his collegiate cross country career in a big way as the captain placed fourth in a field of 77 racers to lead the Saint Joseph's men's cross country squad to a second-place team finish in a field of eight squads at the 2016 IC4A Championship, held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks turned in an average five-mile run time of 26:25.40 to accumulate 68 points. Columbia won the race with 21 points.
All five of SJU's scorers, and six Hawks in total, earned All-East honors for placing in the top 25, led by Daniels and including juniors David Dorsey (11th) and Collin Crilly (15th), sophomore Justin Branco (20th), freshman Josh Clark (22nd), and redshirt junior captain Dan Savage (23rd).
Paced by an average 1k time of 3:34, Daniels crossed the finish line of his final collegiate cross country race in 26:01 to earn his second All-East honor in a row, after taking home a fifth-place finish last season.
Dorsey (26:15) and Crilly (26:32) finished as SJU's #2 and #3 finishers, while Branco (26:39) and Clark (26:40) rounded out SJU's scorers. All three of those returners in Dorsey, Crilly, and Branco ran the fastest IC4A times of their respective collegiate careers on Saturday.
Savage (26:32) and sophomore Tommy Higley (45th, 27:25) crossed as SJU's #6 and #7 finishers.
Led by Daniels and senior captain John Mascioli, the Hawks have now finished second at the IC4A Cross Country Championship three times in the past four years (2016, 2015, 2013).
Daniels, senior Mike Cassidy (46th, 27:26), and Mascioli (62nd, 28:18) raced their final collegiate cross country races as members of the Championship Race roster.
Saturday's IC4A Championship Race and Coaches Race marked the conclusion of SJU's 2016 cross country season. Saint Joseph's 2016-17 indoor track and field season is set to begin Saturday, December 3 at the Jack Pyrah Invitational, hosted by Villanova University at Haverford College's Alumni Field House.
