PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph’s women’s cross country squad will head to the 2016 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship this Friday, November 11. Hosted by Penn State University at the Blue and White Golf Course, the 6k race is slated to begin at noon.
The top two teams and top four individuals receive automatic qualification for the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Championship, to be held on Saturday, November 29 in Terre Haute, Ind.
Saint Joseph's seven runners and one alternate to represent the Hawks at the 2016 Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship will be comprised of SJU's top-eight finishers from the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship race and will include senior captain Sarah Regnault, juniors Caroline Keegan and Cassidy Weimer, sophomores Lindsey Oremus and Britton Gagliardi, and freshmen Emily Bracken, Emily Schaeffer, and Meridith Twomey.
Penn State is ranked first in the Mid-Atlantic while Villanova, Penn, West Virginia, and Georgetown round out the top five. Bucknell, Princeton, Pittsburgh, Duquesne, Maryland, Lehigh, Navy, George Washington, UMBC, and Monmouth sit 6-15. 32 squads are scheduled to race. Penn State won the title last year.
Saint Joseph's placed 11th in a field of 30 teams at the 2015 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship, to finish 10 places and 275 points higher than in 2014. The 11th-place finish marked SJU's highest since 2012. Oremus (44th), Regnault (69th), and Gagliardi (80th) return from the scoring group, while Weimer (143rd) finished as SJU's #7 runner.
All eight of these Hawks raced the terrain of the Blue and White Golf Course back on September 10, at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational. Oremus (36th) led SJU in her season debut with a time of 22:54 while Weimer (42nd, 23:12), Gagliardi (55th, 23:01), Bracken (58th, 24:05), Regnault (24:12), Twomey (24:21), Keegan (24:23), and Schaeffer (24:50) earned course experience.
Led by the All-Conference performances of Oremus (11th) and Weimer (12) in addition to Regnault's 20th-place finish, the Hawks are coming off of a seventh-place showing at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship on October 29.
