MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph’s men’s tennis team posted five straight-sets singles victories on Wednesday afternoon en route to a 7-0 shutout of crosstown rival La Salle. The Hawks also posted wins in each doubles flight for a clean sweep of every match.
The Hawks cruised to the doubles point by taking all three matches, as Jose Sierra and Pierre Brondeau were 8-2 winners in the first flight, Kyle Chalmers and Andres Urrea posted an 8-3 result in the second, and Tristan Boustany and Paranjay Malhotra earned an 8-4 victory in the third.
Brondeau’s first flight match with De’Sean Fennell went the distance, with Brondeau pulling out a 7-5, 6-7 (4), 10-3 win in a supertiebreak. Aside from that, it was smooth sailing for SJU as the five other players in the lineup won in straight sets.
Urrea topped Dale Fetterman, 6-1, 6-1, in the second flight, while Chalmers put away Rob Kasinow by the same score. Boustany won his fifth consecutive singles match with a 6-4, 6-2 fourth-flight triumph over Brian Balico.
Malhotra eased to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Tom MacLeod in flight number five, and Jason Sisti posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mark Robinson to complete the sweep.
“It was a good match, which gave an opportunity for Jason and Paranjay to play so that they are ready to play in the conference championship, if needed,” said head coach Ian Crookenden. “It was a satisfying conclusion to our A-10 matches before the conference championship next week.”
Before heading to Charlottesville, Virginia, for the Atlantic 10 Championship, the Hawks will host Villanova, Saint Peter’s, and Chestnut Hill over the weekend.
