PHILADELPHIA – Senior Jon Eisemann, sophomore Alec Peabody, and junior Steve Butenewicz won their respective events as the Saint Joseph's men's track and field team opened the 2013-14 indoor season at the Jack Pyrah Invitational on Saturday, December 7. The meet was hosted by Villanova at Haverford College's Alumni Field House. The Hawks accumulated 32 points to take home a second-place team finish on the afternoon. Villanova was the meet champion with 83 points.

Competing in the first of six total heats, Eisemann set the tone of the 60m as he crossed the finish line in 7.04. The senior took the top spot out of 32 total competitors.

Peabody clinched his win in the long jump with a mark of 6.68m. After initial marks of 6.48m and 6.44m, the sophomore posted final marks of 6.63m and the eventual 6.68m for the individual victory.

Butenewicz won the 800m in 2:00.79, followed by classmate Jamie Gentile in 2:00.82. The junior duo took the top two spots out of 12 competitors.

"This is the first meet of the year, so it's kind of a pre-season meet to get ready for the kickoff at Penn State for when we come back after New Year's," said senior captain Tyler Dougherty, who led all Hawks with a fifth-place finish in the 300m in 36.64. "This is a way to get everybody back in gear and get us racing again. We did well. It's a good way to start off the year and to get ready for the season."

Dougherty was also strong on the relays as the senior ran the leadoff leg of the 4x400m relay that finished second in 3:23.89. Seniors Derrick Henry, Griff Roberts, and Peter Larmann rounded out the quartet.

In the 500m, standout Tyler Gallen placed second in 1:06.37 while freshman Torey Doaty (1:06.76) and Roberts (1:06.85) took fourth and fifth, respectively.

In his first collegiate 1000m, junior Matthew McGarvey crossed the finish line in 2:31.35, good for a third-place finish.

Rookie Prince Charles Yakubu made his collegiate debut in the jumps, taking fifth (12.95m) in the triple and sixth (6.13m) in the long jump.

After missing the fall cross country season due to injury, junior Paul Szulewski competed in the mile for SJU. Szulewski crossed the finish line in 4:28.88 for seventh place.

The Hawks return to action at the Penn State Indoor Relays on Saturday, January 11. The meet will be hosted by Penn State University in State College, Pa. and will be held at the Multi-Sport Facility and Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. At last season's Penn State Indoor Relays, Steve Butenewicz (1000m), Tyler Gallen (500m), and Paul Szulewski (3000m) won their respective events while Szulewski, Brady Deckert, and Michael Rankin brought home the gold in the 4x100m relay.
