MERION STATION, Pa. – Jordan Martin notched her third goal of the season in the second half, but a pair of tallies from Nicole Hareau, including the game-winner in overtime, gave the Rider Broncs a 2-1 win over the Saint Joseph’s field hockey team on Friday afternoon at Ellen Ryan Field.
Saint Joseph’s (2-8) took the lead just a minute and 40 seconds into the second half as Martin took a pass from Marin Vreeburg, dribbled right, and fired a blast past Rider’s Joelle Prettyman to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Rider (7-3) equalized shortly after as Hareau scored her seventh goal of the season on a feed from Sandra Penas 78 seconds later to make it a 1-1 game.
The rest of the half was a back-and-forth affair, with SJU goalkeeper Rachel Barnett making a pair of key saves in the final minutes to keep the game tied.
In overtime, the Broncs enjoyed a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners and an 8-1 edge in shots, but and early save from Barnett and a clutch defensive save by Sara Kolobielski kept the Hawks in the game.
Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, Penas sent a long ball in front of the cage that Hareau re-directed for the game-winning goal with 1:31 remaining in the first overtime.
Barnett finished the game with seven saves, while Prettyman notched five.
The Hawks are back in action on Sunday afternoon as they host Siena at 1:00 p.m.
