PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team posted five doubles victories and senior Michele Vona and sophomore Arianne Polatnick each added singles wins in the first day of the SJU Invitational Friday afternoon.

Playing in the singles flight, Vona advanced to the round of 16 with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win over Karli Laliberte. Polatnick likewise moved on to the round of 16 on Saturday in the third flight in another dominant performance as she topped Tiffany Ash of Loyola (Md.), 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles action, the team of Aurora Davis and Kristina Eisenbrand advanced to the quarterfinals of the first flight. The pair opened with an 8-7 (5) win over Saint Francis (Pa.) and moved on with an 8-7 (6) victory against Fairfield.

The SJU pair of Devi Jadeja and Kelly Mulquin dropped a tough match in the first doubles flights, falling 8-4, but bounced back to make the semifinals of the consolation bracket with an 8-1 win over Saint Francis.

In the second doubles flight, freshmen Claire Minnoe and Alex Zachem teamed for an 8-0 victory over Fairfield. Unfortunately the duo dropped a tough fight to Delaware in the next round.

Another pair of SJU doubles teams advanced in the second flight consolation bracket. Sarah Contrata and Polatnick advanced to the semifinals with an 8-1 win over Drexel, while Ann Marie Devlin and Mary-Margaret Ewens advanced to the quarterfinals where they'll play Loyola tomorrow.

Saturday's action begins at 8:30 a.m. with matches at the SJU Tennis Complex and Finnesey Courts.
