PHILADELPHIA - Senior captain Elizabeth Barrett won the Friend Big 5 Invitational 4k race in 14:09.58 on Friday afternoon on SJU's home course of the Belmont Plateau in West Fairmount Park. The meet featured 63 runners out of Saint Joseph's, host Temple, La Salle, Penn, and Villanova and was a non-scoring meet. The race consisted of four kilometer-long loops.

The meet recognized the life of Roswell Friend, who passed away in the summer of 2011.

Barrett never trailed during the race, only extending her lead throughout each of her four laps to eventually finish over 19 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. The win comes two weekends after she led the Hawks with a fourth-place finish in the season-opening TCNJ Blue/Gold Classic 5k.

“It was four laps on our home course, and we work out here a lot so it was really good," said Barrett of her victory. "It was flat. Usually when we come to Belmont, we run a lot of hills, but this time it was just four straight laps around the same place. I was hanging out with a few girls for the first two and a half laps, and then on the third lap, I started to feel good and I started to go. On the fourth lap, I just felt pretty strong and I took the lead."

Barrett was joined in the top ten by sophomore Lauren Hehir, who took 10th in 14:47.95. The race marks the second of the season in which Hehir has placed in the top five for SJU, as she continues the momentum of her successful freshman campaign.

Junior Taylor Oskowiak took 16th overall in 14:53.91, just missing a top-15 finish by .32 seconds. Along with Hehir, Oskowiak is also starting the season off on the right foot as she destroyed her PR in the 5k two weekends ago and posted a solid 4k time at Belmont.

After being sidelined by an injury for the entirety of the 2012-13 cross country and track seasons, redshirt senior Maureen O'Donnell looked strong in her first race back. O'Donnell began her comeback season with a promising 20th-place finish (14:58.44) on the afternoon.

Fellow redshirt senior and second-year competitor Erin Giampietro checked in with a time of 15:03.33, good for a 23rd-place finish, to round out SJU's top five.

The Hawks return to action next Saturday at the Meet of Champions. Hosted by Iona College, the meet will be held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. at 10:15 a.m.
