PHILADELPHIA - Senior midfielder Mo Hawkins scored in the 22nd minute and classmate Lauren Jancuska made five saves as the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team downed Loyola (Md.), 1-0, Friday evening at Sweeney Field.
The Hawks (4-1-2) tallied the game's lone goal in the 22nd minute off the foot of Hawkins on a fast moving play. With the ball pressed deep inside the Greyhounds' zone, freshman Emily Gingrich dribbled down the right side before crossing a pass to Hawkins in stride on the left wing. Hawkins gathered the pass and delivered a strike to the back of the lower right corner to give SJU a 1-0 lead at 21:01.
The Greyhounds (1-3-1) would have four scoring chances from there, but Jancuska was stellar, making the save everytime and finishing with five saves on the day for her Atlantic 10 leading fourth shutout of the year.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Sunday when it hosts Penn at 1 p.m.
