DOVER, DE (3/02/04) - Saint Joseph's (1-9) jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but Delaware State (7-4) scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge SJU at Soldier Field, 9-8. Sophomore Ryan Stadanlick was 2-5 with a home run and three RBI for the Hawks. The Crimson and Gray erupted for five runs in the top of the first inning versus the Hornents. Freshman Brian Schappert opened the game by reaching and advancing to second on a throwing error. The Hawks then got back-to-back RBI doubles by Jason Tarewicz and Kevin Walsh. Singles by Stadanlick, Mike Gentile and Greg Mason followed to account for the rest of the SJU offense in the inning. DSU scratched back with singles runs in the first and second to make it 5-2. SJU added two more runs in the third inning on a two run blast by Stadanlick and a solo poke by Jason Volker in the fifth. The Hornets then began a furious rally over the middle innings tallying twice in the fourth, once in the fifth and three times in the sixth inning to tie the score at 8-8. DSU opened the ninth with a double and the runner went to third on a balk before scoring on a sacrifice fly to end the game. Junior Brian Anecharico started and went 4.1, allowing five runs on four hits. Jeff Williams suffered the loss for SJU after tossing 5.0 innings of relief. Jimmy Conroy started for DSU and allowed eight runs and 10 hits in 5.2 innings. Nick Bitter picked up the win in relief.
