PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's men's and women's rowing teams combined to win the Overall Points Trophy at the 72nd Annual Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River. The Hawks took home a total of one gold medal, two silvers and four bronze. SJU's men and women also medaled in seven grand finals.
It marks the first time that Saint Joseph's has won the combined points trophy since 2006, when the Hawks had captured it for two consecutive years.
Saint Joseph's was second in the men's standings, edging Delaware, 26-25.
The Saint Joseph's men's Freshman 8 claimed gold by defeating Drexel. The winning lineup was: Stroke- Chris Higgins, 7- Michael Walsh, 6- Patrick Kenney, 5- Justin Stephano, 4- Marc Ioli, 3- John Lesko, 2- Jamal Anderson, Bow- John Granville, Cox- Billy MacKenzie.
SJU finished second to Michigan State in the Freshman Lightweight 8 with the crew of: Stroke- Miguel Tarrau, 7- Spencer Whitehouse, 6- Chris Young, 5- Ryan Pawling, 4- Brian DeLong, 3- Rob Mullin, 2- Gregory Ludman, Bow- Kane Puga, Cox- Reid Strait.
The Hawks took third place in both the Varsity Lightweight 8 and the Varsity Lightweight 4. The Lightweight 8 was comprised of: Stroke- Matt Benedetto,7- Michael Gibel, 6- Brandon Hanna, 5- Conor Malone, 4- Liam Leyden, 3- Justin Gentile, 2- Chase Powell, Bow- Sean Stewart, Cox- Devon Teichman.
The Varsity 8 won the Petite Final, although that race does not count in the points standings. First place went to the Hawks' lineup of: Stroke- Ryan Huck, 7- Dan Gallagher, 6- Tyler Huck, 5- Glenn Griffin, 4- Tim Strybuc, 3-Alex Pugh, 2- Tom Kresz, Bow- Max Schipper, Cox- Sarah Jost.
