MERION STATION, Pa. - A four-goal first half powered 11th-ranked California past the Saint Joseph's field hockey team, 5-2, on Thursday afternoon at Ellen Ryan Field. Seniors Ellen Rowe and Therese Doyle tallied for the Hawks while senior Liz Messaros and redshirt freshman Kate Mitchell combined for 10 saves in the game.
California (9-2) opened the scoring right away as Andrea Earle scored her 11th goal of the season just under two minutes into the contest to give the Golden Bears the early lead.
Rowe drew Saint Joseph's (2-6) even at the 11:32 mark, taking a feed from senior Theresa Testa on a penalty corner and tipping a shot past Cal's Maddie Hand for her fifth goal of the season.
Lara Kruggel put the Golden Bears back on top 41 seconds later on a long shot from the left side before Lauren Livingston notched first of two on the day with 13:02 left in the half to double the advantage to 3-1.
Deanna Kennedy closed out the first half scoring with her first goal of the season, converting on a loose ball in front of the cage at the 23:21 mark.
Cal scored early for the second straight period as Livingston deposited her second of the day into the SJU cage just 65 seconds into the frame.
Two and a half minutes later, Doyle answered with a shot that went between Hand's legs for her third score of the year.
The teams traded scoring opportunities over the final half hour, but neither could convert.
Messaros got the start in the cage for the Hawks, making four saves before giving way to Mitchell at the interval. The rookie allowed a goal on the first shot she faced but then stood tall, making six saves to keep the Hawks within striking distance.
Hand made five saves for Cal.
The Hawks hit the road for their first true road trip of the season, traveling to Albany, New York for a game against Siena. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
