MERION STATION, Pa. - Senior captain Ellen Rowe scored two goals, but it wasn't enough as the Saint Joseph's field hockey team dropped a 6-3 result to Richmond on Friday afternoon at Ellen Ryan Field. Freshman Jordan Martin scored her sixth goal of the season in the contest as well.

Richmond (10-6 overall, 3-1 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring in the fifth minute as Samantha Ostoich redirected a pass across the front of the cage from Chelsea Davies past Hawk goalkeeper Kate Mitchell for an early 1-0 lead.

Katelin Peterson then tallied twice in a 104-second span to give the Spiders a 3-0 advantage midway through the period before Martin scored with 2:48 to go to cut the halftime deficit to two. After Theresa Testa had a shot saved by UR's Anna Zarkoski, the ball skipped up in the air, allowing Martin to bat it into the cage for SJU's first tally of the day.

The Spiders then benefited from back-to-back goals from Rebecca Barry to take a commanding 5-1 lead with 20:54 to go in the game. Barry scored both goals on tip-ins that followed penalty corner attempts by Davies.

Saint Joseph's (5-9 overall, 0-3 Atlantic 10) fought hard to get back in the game, with Rowe scoring her eighth of the season after a pass from fellow co-captain Rachel Walsh to cut the deficit down to three.

After UR's Allison Siegel took a feed from Peterson to notch her first career goal, Rowe tied her career-best by tallying her ninth goal of the campaign on a pass from senior Therese Doyle to close the scoring.

Mitchell made four saves in the first half while senior Liz Messaros made a pair in relief. Zarkoski stopped five shots for Richmond.

The Hawks enjoyed a slight 6-4 advantage in penalty corners, while the Spiders outshot SJU 20-12.

Saint Joseph's is back in action on Sunday for a critical Atlantic 10 contest at La Salle. Game time is set for noon at Hank DeVincent Field.
