PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team fell to Mount St. Mary's, 18-8, on Wednesday night in its final game on Finnesey Field this season. Marrapese led SJU with three goals on the night.
Saint Joseph's stayed in the game until the end of the third quarter when the Mountaineers scored four straight to take a five-point lead at 12-7, and outscored the Hawks 8-1 in the fourth.
Mount St. Mary's Andrew Scalley got on the board first and Marrapese retaliated with two goals before the Mount would score again. SJU's Peter Slowik added a goal at 3:46 but Scalley tied it up with 1:34 left in the frame to make it 3-3 at the end of the first.
Joey D'Avanzo opened scoring in the second and the Mountaineers attacked back with 2:29 left in the half. MSM's Jake Willertz snuck a ball by SJU goalkeeper Griffin Ferrigan with 20 seconds remaining for a 5-4 Mount Saint Mary's lead at the half.
After the Hawks outshot the Mountaineers 20-12 in the first half, MSM came firing back, outshooting SJU 23-16 in the second.
Scalley netted back-to-back goals to start the third quarter before Hawks' Charlie Gorman found the back of the net a minute later. Willertz made it 8-5 at the 10:21 mark before freshman Kyle Williams scored a goal and set up Sean Cullinan for a score to put the Hawks back within one at 8-7.
Mount St. Mary's closed out the third quarter with three goals, including two from Willertz, and outscored the Hawks 8-1 in the last quarter for an 18-8 final.
The Hawks travel to Manhattan on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. face-off.
