RICHMOND, VA (05/05/02) - Senior Bernadette Speer won her third A-10 Outdoor high jump championship highlighting a record-setting final day for Saint Joseph's at the 2002 Verizon Atlantic 10 Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championshps. The Hawks placed eighth overall at the meet held at Richmond's Sports Backers Stadium, but set three school records on the day. Speer jumped 5-feet, 6 1/2-inches in winning her final A-10 competition of her brilliant career. Senior Mary Korfmacher placed second at 400 meters in a time of 57.24 to earn second team all-conference accolades. The Hawks' 4x400 team of Korfmacher, senior Brooke Gilliford, sophomore Yasmin Copeland and junior Sarah Conway also took second places to garner conference accolades, qualifying for the ECAC Championships in a school-record time of 3:51.59. Gillford was also involved in two other school records, placing fourth at 100 meters in a record time of 12.25 seconds, and helping the 4x100 relay of freshman Colleen Laden, Korfmacher and junior Maisha Tyler place third in a time of 48.17. The 4x100 also qualified for the ECACs. Sophomore Emily Horton placed fourth at the heptathlon with 3,742 points to lead the Hawks other scorers at the meet. She was joined by Conway, who placed 5th at the 800; senior Denise Fergus (6th at 5000 meters); freshman Colleen Flanaghan (7th at 1500 meters); Sarah Bright (8th at 1500 meters); and the 4x800 of sophomore Mary Crossin, Bright, Flanaghan and freshman Kelly Victory (8th). The Hawks next compete at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Richmond on May 11.
