NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Saint Joseph's freshman forward Nicole Gerdes was named the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Rookie of the Week on Monday, the conference office announced. Gerdes tallied two goals and an assist in Sunday's win over Siena, and is the second Hawk in a row to win the weekly honor.
Gerdes opened the scoring on Sunday, tipping in a long pass from Therese Doyle just over two minutes into the contest to get the Hawks on the board. She followed up with her second of the day about six minutes later, taking a feed from Jordan Martin and depositing it in the cage for a 2-0 Saint Joseph's advantage.
The Robbinsville, N.J. native added a fifth point later on in the half, assisting on a goal by Ellen Rowe that gave SJU a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Gerdes now ranks second in goals, assists, and total points among the squad's rookies, tallying three goals and an assist for seven points.
The honor is the second consecutive Rookie of the Week award won by a Hawk, as Martin garnered the conference accolade last week.
The Hawks are back in action on Friday afternoon for their Atlantic 10 opener against Temple. A pre-game ceremony officially dedicating Ellen Ryan Field will begin at 2:45, with the game between the local rivals set to start at 4:00 p.m.
