PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team fell to Canisius, 11-10, in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Finnesey Field. The Hawks trailed by two, 10-8, with just under three minutes to go in regulation play before Sean Evans and Artie Marrapese scored back-to-back goals to send the Hawks into overtime.
The Hawks traded goals with Canisius in the first quarter with Joey D'Avanzo and Evans each scoring a goal for a 2-2 score at the end of the frame.
SJU scored three straight goals to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead with 4:07 remaining in the second quarter before the Griffins would retaliate in the third period, holding SJU scoreless while netting six goals for an 8-5 edge at the end of the quarter.
Scott Cullinan opened the fourth quarter with a goal two minutes in before Canisius rallied back less than a minute later. Evans and Marrapese each scored a goal to put the Hawks within one with 4:31 to go. After a Griffins goal at the 3:07 mark, Evans and Marrapese struck again at 2:20 and 1:52 to knot the game at 10-10.
The Hawks won the face-off in overtime but the Giffins didn't waist any time as they caused SJU to turn the ball over and Canisius' Mike Benzinger drilled the game-winning goal just 37 seconds into the frame.
Evans tallied five points (3 goals, 2 assists) while Marrapese finished with three goals and an assist. Griffin Ferrigan made eight saves in net for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's returns to action next Saturday, April 10, when it travels to VMI for a 1:00 p.m. match. Photos from today's game can be viewed at sidephotos.com
