Lexington, Va. - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season as it defeated VMI, 11-5, on Saturday afternoon at Foster Stadium. Goalkeeper Griffin Ferrigan helped the Hawks break a 10-game losing streak with 18 saves in net.
In the first quarter Steve Dunn opened scoring at the 13:44 mark but VMI's Colin Boss attacked back just three seconds later. The Keydets took a 2-1 lead and out-shot the Hawks 14-7 in the frame, but Ferrigan made an impressive seven saves between the pipes.
After another VMI goal at the 14:50 mark in the second, Saint Joseph's Kyle Williams retaliated with a score just 17 seconds later to spark a 7-0 Hawk run. Scott Cullinan netted back-to-back goals to tie the game and put the Hawks up by one and then set up Sean Evans for a man-up goal with 3:49 left for a 5-3 lead at the break.
Artie Marrapese kept the Hawks run going with two goals of his own in the beginning of the third before the teams went scoreless for nearly nine minutes before Joey D'Avanzo added a goal for SJU with 27 seconds remaining in the third for an 8-3 lead.
Despite getting out-shot 11-6 in the fourth quarter the Hawks were able to maintain their ample lead outscoring the Keydets 3-2. Cullinan scored with 6:07 to go while Williams added two more at the 3:19 and 1:50 marks to seal the Hawks' victory at 11-5.
Ferrigan made 10 saves in the second half alone and totaled seven ground balls on the afternoon.
Williams tallied five points (3 goals, 2 assists) while Cullinan totaled four points with three goals and an assist. Marrapese added two scores and dished two assists in the win.
The Hawks host Detroit next on Saturday, April 17 at Finnesey Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
