PHILADELPHIA--The track at Finnesey Field is undergoing major renovations this summer as the old track is being ripped up and a new surface will be installed in the coming months.
"The new track will be great and both the men's and women's teams are thrilled," said Director of Track & Field and Women's Head Coach Kevin Quinn. "The coaches and athletes all see it as another step forward and a very visible sign of the University's commitment to track and field."
Saint Joseph's track & field has occupied the space since Finnesey Field's inception in 1929. Over time, it has gone through several modifications in the last 81 years.
The field was initially intended for a 70,000-seat stadium for football. The team was disbanded in 1939, and so too was the megastadium.
Joining track at the field was baseball from 1947-1959, men's soccer from 1958-present, field hockey from 1983-2007, softball from 1983-1990, men's and women's lacrosse from 1993-present and women's soccer from 1996-present.
Lights were installed at the facility in 1994 and a grandstand was added in 2003.
Three phases of the latest renovations will take place from May 18 to the first week of June 1, July 27 through August 10 and August 17 to August 21.
