MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's field hockey team announced its 2012 schedule this week, a slate that includes 11 home games in the program's first full season at Ellen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus.
The Hawks open the campaign on August 24 with the first of three straight home games. SJU will host Liberty, crosstown rival Drexel (August 31), and Hofstra (September 2) before hitting the road. After spending three and a half seasons playing their home games at Drexel's Buckley Field, the Hawks will finally host the Dragons on the Saint Joseph's campus for the first time since 2007.
SJU travels to Delaware on September 5 for its first road match of the season before playing back-to-back contests in the state of Connecticut with games at Fairfield on September 9 and Quinnipiac on September 14.
The Hawks then begin a stretch where they play eight of 11 at home, including their next four in a row. After hosting Siena on September 16, SJU takes on Monmouth on September 21, Colgate on September 23, and Ohio University on September 28.
On September 30, the Hawks will travel to the University of Virginia for a marquee matchup with the Cavaliers, a perennial national title contender.
Returning home for a rivalry game, Saint Joseph's plays host to Villanova on October 3. Last season, the Hawks earned their first-ever victory at Ellen Ryan Field with a 3-2 overtime triumph over the Wildcats.
A trip to Saint Louis on October 7 begins the Atlantic 10 portion of the schedule. SJU hosts Lock Haven and La Salle on October 12 and 14, respectively, before traveling to face defending league champion Richmond on October 19. The final home match of the season, against league power Massachusetts, follows on October 21.
The Hawks will head right back to Richmond for their first-ever conference game against VCU, which joins the league this season, on October 26, before closing out the regular season at Temple on October 28.
The 2012 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship is slated for Amherst, Massachusetts, on November 2 and 3.
