PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Delaware, 15-5, in Friday afternoon's first Division I lacrosse contest in the country. Seniors Sean Evans and Joey D'Avanzo each scored two goals, while Griffin Ferrigan made 16 saves.
The Hawks came out strong in the first period, holding Delaware off until the 6:33 mark when Blue Hens' Martin Cahill put the first goal on the board. Scott Cullinan answered back with a goal from Steve Dunn with 2:48 to play to end the period at 1-1. The Hawks outshot UD 12-7 in the frame.
In the second period, Delaware's Curtis Dickson would begin his four-goal outing, scoring his first at the 12:20 mark. Evans would answer back one minute later but Dickson would add another and Delaware would add two more to jump out to a 5-2 lead at the half.
Delaware started off the third period with a goal at 12:08 before D'Avanzo scored back-to-back goals at 10:04 and 5:58 to bring the lead within two, but Dickson drilled another just eight seconds later to extend the lead back to three.
Unfortunately for the Hawks they couldn't muster any more offense until the end of the fourth when Evans scored his second. The Blue Hens would score two more in the third and outscored SJU 6-1 in the fourth, despite Ferrigan's seven-save effort, to make it 15-5.
The Hawks return to action when they host Lehigh on Saturday, February 13 at 1:00 p.m.
