PHILADELPHIA – Two goals from freshman Emily Henry led the way as the Saint Joseph’s field hockey team opened its 2017 season with a 4-1 win over Temple at Howarth Field on Friday night.

Freshman Sara Hayes tallied her first career goal in the game, while junior Anna Willocks notched a goal and an assist on the night, becoming just the third Hawk to ever reach the 100-point plateau in her career.

Saint Joseph’s (1-0) had the early edge, which Hayes converted into a lead just over 13 minutes into the contest, redirecting a shot from Willocks past Temple’s Maddie Lilliock.

Seven minutes later, Henry doubled the lead, picking up a loose ball on a penalty corner and tucking it home for her first collegiate goal.

Henry then made it a pair just three minutes into the second half, picking up the rebound after Willocks’ penalty corner blast was saved and giving SJU a 3-0 advantage.

Temple (0-1) got one back with 23 minutes remaining as Rachael Mueller notched her first of the season for the Owls, but Willocks restored the three-goal margin by converting on a penalty corner opportunity set up by sophomore Pepa Serrano and freshman Jordan Olenginski.

Sophomore Victoria Kammerinke made three saves in the cage for the Hawks, while Lilliock made six stops in defeat.  Saint Joseph’s peppered the Temple cage throughout the game, outshooting the Owls 21-8, while earning 11 penalty corners and turning three of them into goals.

“What a great way to open the fall season,” head coach Lynn Farquhar said.  “We took care of each other and had fun doing it.  The preparation and commitment over the summer has allowed our Hawk unit to take another step forward.  I commend our players group for investing in each other over those summer months.  This team has a special energy that we hope to ignite and we will enjoy the journey.”

The Hawks will face another stern test on Sunday afternoon as they visit sixth-ranked Maryland.  Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
