LEXINGTON, Ky. – Saint Joseph's men's track and field senior Torey Doaty placed in the top half of the 400m hurdles first round field at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Rounds on Thursday afternoon and will advance to Friday evening's quarterfinal in the event. Doaty raced to a season-best time of 52.02, the second-fastest time of his collegiate career, to place 12th in the overall field of 48 at the University of Kentucky's Track and Field Complex.

The top three hurdlers out of each heat automatically advance, followed by the next six best times. Doaty finished fourth in his heat behind a trio of sub-52.00 performances and edged out Rutgers' Kyle Holder for the fourth-best time out of the second heat.

The top 24 finishers from Thursday's first round now advance to Friday's quarterfinal, slated for 7:15 p.m. The top 12 finishers out of the quarterfinal will punch their tickets to Oregon for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

This marks Doaty's third consecutive 400m hurdles appearance at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds and the first time that he will advance out of the first round after finishing 42nd last spring and 39th in 2015.

Doaty has now gone sub-53.00 in four of his last five appearances.

A duo of Hawks will now represent Saint Joseph's tomorrow evening as Doaty takes the 400m hurdles (7:15 p.m.) and senior Dan Savage races the 3000m steeplechase quarterfinal at 8:20 p.m.

The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Rounds are also running from May 25-27, hosted by the University of Texas at Austin at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, TX.

The qualifiers out of these preliminary rounds will advance to the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, to be held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon from June 7-10. 14 Hawks have qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the program's history; Kevin McDonnell was the most recent, qualifying in the 10,000m in 2013.
