ARLINGTON, Va. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team kicked off its final series of the season in style, highlighted by a six-run fifth inning, as the Hawks topped George Washington, 11-3, at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park on Thursday afternoon.

Saint Joseph's (20-24 overall, 11-11 Atlantic 10) took the lead in the top of the first as Deon Stafford, Jr., singled and Cal Jadacki doubled before Dominic Cuoci hit a sacrifice fly to put the Hawks in front.

SJU doubled the lead in the fourth when Brian Lau's two-out fly ball was dropped by first baseman Bobby Campbell, allowing Charlie Concannon to cross the plate and make it 2-0.

The Hawks sent 10 hitters to the plate in the fifth, plating six runs to break the game open.  Matt Maul singled to lead off the inning before Stafford walked and Jadacki singled to load the bases for Cuoci, whose second sacrifice fly of the day extended the Hawk lead to 3-0.

After a walk to Concannon loaded the bases once again and chased starter Shane Sweeney, Marc Giacalone drew a free pass from reliever Jaret Edwards; two batters later, Lau walked home another run before Taylor Boyd tripled off of Tyler Swiggart to push the lead to 8-0 after five.

George Washington (29-24 overall, 13-9 Atlantic 10) loaded the bases with one down in the bottom of the fifth, but Tim Brennan induced a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.

In the sixth, consecutive singles by Jadacki and Cuoci brought up Concannon, who reached on an error to tack on another run before a sac fly from Giacalone extended the lead to 10-0.

The Colonials broke through in the seventh, loading the bases with nobody out for Joey Bartosic, who hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Matt Cosentino to score and get GW on the board.  Andrew Selby followed with another fielder's choice to cut the Hawk advantage to 10-2.

GW added one more in the eighth on a single by Brandon Chapman, but Lau got it back in the ninth with an RBI groundout after a double by Giacalone.

Brennan went seven innings for the Hawks, allowing two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out one, to level his record at 4-4.  Sweeney was charged with six runs, five earned, on five hits and three walks in four and a third innings; he fell to 2-5.

The teams will continue the series on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
