BRONX, N.Y. – Jason Lundy’s two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth led Fordham to a 4-3 win over the Saint Joseph’s baseball team at Houlihan Park on Thursday afternoon.
With the Hawks on top, 3-2, Brian Lau struck out Reiss Knehr to start the inning before issuing a walk to Ryan Mahoney. Lundy followed with his third home run of the season to win the game for the Rams.
Fordham (16-13 overall, 5-4 Atlantic 10) took the lead in the bottom of the first, scoring an unearned run after an error, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI single by Mark Donadio.
Dominic Cuoci brought Saint Joseph’s (10-16 overall, 3-4 Atlantic 10) level in the top of the second, taking Mike Cowell deep for his team-leading eighth home run of the season.
The Hawks went ahead in the fourth, plating a pair of runs without the benefit of a hit. Charlie Concannon and Lau drew consecutive walks to start the frame before a fly ball to right off the bat of Cal Jadacki put Concannon on third with one out. A passed ball scored Concannon and moved Lau up to second before a pair of wild pitches from Cowell brought him home to make it a 3-1 SJU advantage.
The Rams got back within one in the fifth after Matthew Kozuch hit a two-out double and scored on a single by Jake Baker. Fordham had another chance in the sixth, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Zach DeVincenzo threw Donadio out at the plate on a fielder’s choice before fanning Mahoney to keep the game at 3-2, where it would remain until the ninth.
Kyle Martin got the win for Fordham, improving to 5-1 on the season after allowing one hit in one shutout inning of relief. Lau fell to 0-1 with the loss.
Justin Aungst got the start for SJU and tossed five solid innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits while striking out three. DeVincenzo allowed just one hit and struck out two in three innings of relief as well.
The teams will continue the series on Friday. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m. at Houlihan Park.
