PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team picked up its second straight win as the Hawks held off VCU, 64-58, Wednesday afternoon at Hagan Arena.

Playing in front of a raucous 1,462 fans as part of SJU's annual Fieldtrip to the Fieldhouse promotion for area school children, the Hawks battled back from an early deficit, 9-6, to take a 17-11 lead after the opening quarter. Sparked by a three-pointer from sophomore Alyssa Monaghan, Saint Joseph's ripped off 11-straight points over a three minute period to regain its early lead.

In the second quarter, the Hawks (5-11, 2-2 Atlantic 10) pushed their lead to as many as nine, 25-16, on a three-pointer by sophomore Sarah Veilleux. But VCU countered with a 9-3 run to end the period to make it 28-25 at halftime.

The Rams (9-9, 2-3 A-10) continued to push SJU in the third quarter, cutting their deficit to one four times.

Ahead 36-35, the Hawks got timely buckets from sophomore Kristalyn Baisden and senior Amanda Fioravanti as they extended their lead to 45-39 entering the fourth quarter.

Falling behind by eight with under five minutes to play, VCU rallied to make it a one-possession game, 56-54, on a Curteeona Brelove layup with 1:53 to play.

Off an offensive rebound by Fioravanti, junior Chelsea Woods connected on a three-point play with under a minute to go to put SJU up 59-54.

Monaghan and Veilleux combined to go 5-of-6 from the foul line to close out the victory.

For the game, the Hawks went 22-of-59 from the floor (37.3 percent), 5-of-17 from three-point range (29.4 percent) and 15-of-19 from the foul line (78.9 percent). Saint Joseph's took advantage of its 34-32 edge in rebounding as it converted 12 offensive rebounds into 16 second chance points.

Individually, Monaghan posted a game-high 17 points, while junior Adashia Franklyn added 12 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Woods was the third Hawk in double figures, adding 10 points in a reserve role.
