MERION STATION, Pa. – On a cold and rain-soaked afternoon, the Saint Joseph’s baseball team set a new program record for wins with a 7-4 victory over Rider at Smithson Field on Tuesday.  The Hawks notched their 27th win of the season, surpassing the mark of 26 set by last year’s squad.

Saint Joseph’s (27-10) took the lead in the bottom of the first, plating three runs on three hits and an error. Chris Hueth led off and hit a ball through the infield that the Bronc defense was slow to pick up, allowing Hueth to leg out a double.  An infield single by Collin Forgey then left runners on the corners for Mike Muha, who grounded out to second to score Hueth with the game’s first run.

Tommy Cunningham followed with a single through the left side; a throwing error by Rider left fielder Eric Strano allowed Forgey to score and Cunningham to go all the way to third.  He would then come in on a passed ball to extend the lead to 3-0

Rider (13-26) got one back in the second on an RBI groundout by Brian Donnelly.

The Broncs tied things up in the fifth without a hit as a walk and a pair of Hawk errors allowed two runs to score and make it a 3-3 game.  Rider then took the lead on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

David Hafer retired 14 consecutive batters at one point for the Broncs, but Muha led off the sixth with a double down the left field line and came in to tie the game on a double by Cunningham.  Two batters later, Kevin Kratochwill singled home Cunningham with what turned out to be the winning run.

Spencer Judge followed with the first home run of his collegiate career to put the Hawks on top, 7-4.

Steve Powles pitched two strong innings of relief to bridge the gap to Steven Schuler, who pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the season.

Ryan Kelly earned his third win of the year in relief, while Hafer fell to 3-3 with the loss.

The Hawks will head to Maryland on Wednesday for a non-conference tilt against the Terrapins.  First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
