Women's Tennis Cap Spring Break With Wins Over Robert Morris and UPR - Rio Piedras

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team capped its strong play on Spring Break, picking up 7-0 wins over the University of Puerto Rico - Rio Piedras and Robert Morris.

Versus the University of Puerto Rico - Rio Piedras, the SJU underclassmen got the team out to an early 1-0 lead, taking all three doubles matches. Sophomore Kristina Eisenbrand and freshman Sarah Contrata were 8-3 winners at the top flight, while sophomores Anne Marie Devlin and Mary-Margaret Ewens were 8-3 winners at the second flight. Seniors Devi Jadeja and Classmate Michele Vona closed out the doubles play with an 8-2 win at the third flight.

In singles play, Eisenbrand was a 6-01, 6-0 victor at the top flight, with freshman Claire Minnoe following with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the second flight. Junior Lauren Roy posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at the third flight, while freshman Alex Zachem earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at the fourth flight. Contrata Ewens closed out singles play posting 6-2, 6-1 and 7-5, 7-5 wins, respectively.

Against Robert Morris, Saint Joseph's (6-4) was challenged in doubles matches to start, but pulled out wins at the first two flights and got a default win at the third flight.

Zachem and junior Aurora Davis earned an 8-3 win at the top flight, with Eisenbrand and Roy fighting to an 8-6 victory at the second flight. Polatnick and Devlin earned a default win at the third flight for the sweep for the Hawks.

Singles play netted the Hawks six points, posting two-set wins in the top five matches.

Davis got SJU started with a 7-5, 6-1 win at first singles, while junior Kelly Mulquin picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win at the second flight. Minnoe was an 8-6, 6-2 winner at No. 3 singles, with Polatnick posting a 6-0, 6-1 win at the fourth flight. Zachem claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win at the fifth flight, while Devlin earned a default win at No. 6 singles for SJU.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Saturday at St. Bonaventure.
