PHILADELPHIA - Senior guard Erin Shields became the 22nd player in Saint Joseph's women's basketball history to reach 1,000 points for her career as she helped the Hawks top Hofstra, 73-60, Tuesday evening at Hagan Arena. Shields, who reached the milestone at 5:21 of the first half, finished with a game-high 20 points in helping SJU to its eighth straight win.
Leading wire to wire, the Hawks (9-1) took control from the tip running out to a 19-7 lead on a jumper by Shields at 11:18. Saint Joseph's defense caused fits for Hofstra early, holding the Pride to 3-of-14 from the field and causing four turnovers over the opening eight minutes.
Hofstra (4-4) cut the Hawks' lead to eight, 25-17, but SJU built the edge back to double figures by halftime, taking a 33-23 advantage into the second half.
Saint Joseph's didn't allow hofstra an opportunity to get momentum in the second half as it used a 14-2 run to begin the stanza, opening a 47-25 gap on a layup by Natasha Cloud at 15:54.
The Hawks would hold the Pride at a 20-point distance for much of second half, with Hofstra only finally cutting into the deficit with under three minutes to play.
For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 41 percent from the floor (25-of-61), 38.9 percent from three-point range (7-of-18) and hit 16-of-20 from the foul line. The Hawks also finished with a 43-38 advantage in rbeounding and cause 17 turnovers.
Individually, sophomore Sarah Fairbanks added 15 points, while Cloud posted her second double-double of the year, scoring 11 points to go with 11 rebounds and eight assists.
At the other end, Hofstra hit 20-of-60 from the field, 7-of-22 from behind the arc (31.8 percent) and 13-of-22 from the foul line (59.1 percent). Andreana Thomas' 14 points led two Pride players in double figures.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, December 21 at Syracuse at 1 p.m.
