MECHANICSVILLE, Va. – Led by the All-Conference performance of senior Lizzy Barrett, the Saint Joseph's women's cross country team placed sixth at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday morning. Hosted by Richmond at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Va., the meet saw 111 runners from 12 A-10 institutions compete in the 5k race.
The Hawks totaled 154 points with a total time of 1:30.33.70 and averaged an individual time of 18:06.74. SJU missed a top-five finish to UMass by just two points. Duquesne won the meet (53), followed by Richmond (73) and La Salle (118).
In sixth place after the first 3427m, Barrett continued to dominate the race as she finished 12th overall in a new 5k PR of 17:32.50. The senior flew past her previous PR in the event by 1:16 to earn her first career All-Conference honors.
"Lizzy Barrett has come into her own and has grown into being one of the very top kids in the conference," said women's cross country head coach Kevin Quinn on Wednesday leading up to the meet.
Sophomore Lauren Hehir checked in with a 20th-place individual finish in 17:50.00. Hehir completed her first 3427m in 12:06.8 to sit in 22nd before edging out La Salle's Anne Areias and UMass' Christine Davis for the top 20 finish. The sophomore's only other 5k time of the season, 19:34.80, was destroyed by over a minute and a half.
Following suit, redshirt senior Erin Giampietro and senior Emma Slattery posted 30th- and 33rd-place finishes, respectively. Gampietro's time of 18:04.40 was more than two entire minutes faster than her previous PR in the event. Slattery, who fought through injury at the start of the season, clocked in at a remarkable 18:07.10 - just a few seconds more than her eighth-place time at the 2012 A-10 Cross Country Championships.
Sophomore Emily Chaundy rounded out the point-scorers for the Hawks, crossing the finish line in a PR 19:18.40 for 82nd overall.
