RICHMOND, Va. – Junior goalkeeper Rachel Barnett made eight saves, but a goal midway through the first half gave VCU a 1-0 victory over the Saint Joseph’s field hockey team at Cary Street Field on Friday afternoon.

VCU (9-9 overall, 3-3 Atlantic 10) scored at the 14:50 mark of the first half as Kendell Combs converted a penalty corner opportunity on a feed from Stephanie DeMasi and Nicole Barry.

Both teams notched five shots in an evenly-played first half, with Barnett and VCU’s Megan Botteri making three saves apiece.

In the second half, Barnett kept Saint Joseph’s (6-12 overall, 3-3 Atlantic 10) in the game as the Rams ripped off nine shots, but the junior made five saves to hold VCU to just the lone goal.  Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, the Hawks were not able to solve Botteri and Combs’ goal became the margin of victory.

The Hawks will close out the regular season on Sunday afternoon at Richmond.  Game time is set for noon at Crenshaw Field.
