MERION STATION, Pa. – In a must-win game, the Saint Joseph’s field hockey team pulled out a little Senior Day magic as Jordan Martin scored the lone goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) at Ellen Ryan Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Hawks honored senior captains Sara Kolobielski and Shannon McNeill in a pregame ceremony and kept that energy going throughout the match.  Junior Rachel Barnett made four first-half saves for SJU to keep the game scoreless through halftime.

Shortly after the start of the second half, Martin gave Saint Joseph’s (6-11 overall, 3-2 Atlantic 10) the lead, dribbling into the circle and spinning around before beating Red Flash keeper Samantha Zeiders for what would turn out to be the game’s only goal.

Both teams had opportunities to add to the ledger, but Barnett and Zeiders kept the game a one-goal affair with key saves down the stretch.  Barnett made an outstanding save off a corner attempt by SFU’s Autumn Pellman late in the second half to preserve the clean sheet.

Barnett finished with six saves to earn her third shutout of the season, while Zeiders made five in defeat for Saint Francis (7-7 overall, 2-3 Atlantic 10).

The Hawks close out the regular season with a game at VCU at 3:00 p.m. Friday and a noon start at Richmond on Sunday.
