MERION STATION, Pa. – Saint Joseph’s senior Jose Sierra moved into the semifinals of the first singles flight at the fifth annual Saint Joseph’s Men’s Tennis Invitational at the SJU Tennis Complex on Saturday. 

Sierra won his first round match over Villanova’s Max Levine, 6-1, 6-3, before topping Benjamin Davies of Army, 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.

Also in the first flight, Dan Barrus was a 6-2, 6-2, straight-sets winner over Drexel’s Skyler Davis before falling to Adam Lawton of Delaware, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarters, while Pierre Brondeau suffered a 6-4, 6-4, defeat at the hands of Drexel’s Alex Fioravante, in the first round.

In flight number two, Andres Urrea reached the semifinals with a 6-3, 7-6 (5), win over Army’s Daniel Shutov and a 6-1, 6-4, defeat of Evan Andrews of Delaware.

Paranjay Malhotra was a first round winner in the second flight as well, topping Brian Pinkard of Lafayette, 2-6, 6-3, 10-4, before succumbing to Mike Furr of Delaware, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5, in the quarterfinals.

Jason Sisti took his first round match in a supertiebreaker, defeating Ryan Peyton of Villanova, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 10-7, before falling to Drexel’s Dan Koehler, 6-3, 7-6 (1).

Tristan Boustany and Kyle Chalmers were two-time winners in the third flight.  Boustany earned a spot in the semifinals with a 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 win over Chris Matturri of Lafayette and a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 triumph over Army’s Sam Jang-Milsten.

Chalmers punched his ticket to the semis with a pair of wins in straight sets; he beat Villanova’s Bradley Noyes, 7-5, 6-3, in the first round before dismissing T.J. Morgan of Lafayette, 6-4, 6-0.

Also in the third flight, Kevin Gates suffered a 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 supertiebreaker loss to Tyler Pultro of Drexel in the first round.

In fourth flight action, Sam Cadwell and Clark Ruiz exited in the first round.  Cadwell was stopped in a supertiebreaker, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8, by Army’s Chad Llewellyn, while Ruiz went down to Luis Miranda of Villanova, 6-3, 6-3.

Play will conclude on Sunday at the SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus and on Finnesey Courts.  The first matches of the day – the first, second, and third singles flight semifinals – are slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. on the Maguire Campus.
