WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The 17th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team opened its 2019 season in style on Sunday afternoon, routing Hofstra by a 9-1 score.  Sophomore Tonya Botherway opened the campaign with a hat trick as the Hawks set a new program record for goals scored in a game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• In a flash!  The Hawks dominated the first quarter, outshooting the Pride, 11-0.  It took less than seven minutes for Botherway to get the Hawks on the board, and she followed with another just after the 10-minute mark.

• Senior Emily Sayre then opened her account with three minutes to go in the period before junior Jordan Olenginski tallied with just 21 seconds to go to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead after one.

• Senior Pepa Serrano lit the lamp three minutes into the second quarter to extend the lead to five, but Camilla Larsson converted a penalty stroke to bring Hofstra back within 5-1 at halftime.

• Right out of the break, Botherway restored the five-goal lead as she converted a penalty stroke opportunity two and a half minutes into the third quarter.

• Shortly before the end of the frame, freshman Leigh James scored her first career goal, and less than a minute into the fourth ,classmate Kacie Patton notched her first tally to push the advantage to 8-1.

• Serrano set up Bentz with just under five minutes to play in the game to put the Hawks up 9-1 and set a new program record for goals in a game.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• The Hawks set a new single-game program record with nine goals.  The previous mark of eight was hit four times, including three times in the previous four seasons.

• SJU ripped off 15 shots in each half, finishing the game with a 30-1 advantage.  The Hawk defense did not allow a shot from open play.

• The Hawks enjoyed an 11-0 advantage on penalty corner opportunities, with four of them leading directly to goals.
