The Saint Joseph's field hockey program will welcome a new class of student-athletes for the 2019 season. Over the coming weeks, we’ll introduce Hawk fans to the new additions, one by one. Today: Kate Blincoe.
Kate Blincoe, a back from Palmerston North, New Zealand, has signed a letter of intent to join the Saint Joseph’s field hockey program in advance of the 2019 season.
Blincoe was a standout performer on the pitch and in the classroom at Palmerston North Girls High School, where she served as the captain of the first team and won the school’s Outstanding Hockey Player award in 2018. Blincoe was also a standout in the sport of canoe polo; her efforts on the pitch and the water led to her being named the school’s Top All-Round Sportswoman.
“I am most excited to make a whole bunch of new friends and push myself out of my comfort zone,” Blincoe said. “I am also very keen to experience all of the amazing opportunities there are in the United States.”
“Kate is our newest Kiwi,” head coach Lynn Farquhar said of Blincoe, who hails from the same hometown and high school as current senior Anna Willocks, and will join fellow New Zealand native Tonya Botherway on the Hawk squad next season. “Her strength, mentality, and love for sport will be keys to our development. There aren’t many athletes that can perform at the top level in multiple sports; we’re excited to add a power player to the Hawk Hockey family.”
Blincoe has been a member of the Central Hockey Association U-18 squad and the High School Hockey Club program as well. She has taken part in the Federation Cup, and was also a vice-captain with the New Zealand U-21 women’s team that placed third at the world championships in Canada in 2018.
“I am super-passionate about hockey, and Anna Willocks is a family friend,” Blincoe said. “Seeing her grow and achieve at Saint Joseph’s has been inspiring and I am looking forward to following after her. I also love team sports, so I am very excited to come to SJU, where there is an amazing team culture and family environment.”
Blincoe and the rest of the new Hawks will join the squad in time for the 2019 fall season.
