OLEAN, N.Y. - A pair of runs in the top of the seventh lifted the Saint Joseph's softball team to an 8-6 victory in its series finale at St. Bonaventure on Sunday. With the victory, the Hawks earned a series sweep of the Bonnies to improve to 18-15 on the year and 7-2 in the Atlantic 10.
Tied at 6-6 heading into the seventh, Saint Joseph's Amanda Kulp led off the top half of the inning with a bunt single and promptly stole second. Following a strike out, Sarah Ostaszewski delivered a triple that scored Kulp to make it 7-6. Molly Kapala added an insurance run in the next at-bat as she singled to left center, allowing Ostaszewski to easily score from third.
St. Bonaventure would get the tying run to the plate following a one-out double, but SJU rookie Amanda Herr worked out of trouble as she induced a fielder's choice and a pop out to end the game.
The Bonnies (5-21, 2-6 A-10) took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly, but the Hawks responded with three runs in the third to take a 3-1 edge. Kulp plated the first run on an RBI double, then stole home later in the inning on a double steal to make it 2-1. Kapala drove in Ostaszewski for the third run of the inning, but a two-run bottom half of the inning tied it for St. Bonaventure at 3-3.
A two-run double in the bottom of the fourth put the Bonnies ahead again, 5-3; however the Hawks regained the lead, 6-5, in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Kapala and a two-run home run by Caela Abadie.
St. Bonaventure pushed the tying run home in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game and a scoreless sixth led to the thrilling seventh and a Hawk victory.
Herr picked up the win for SJU, tossing 3.0 innings of relief and allowing one run on three hits, to improve to 6-1 on the season. Starter Ashley Ventura tossed 4.0 innings and allowed five runs on six hits.
At the plate, Kapala was 4-for-4 with three runs batted in and a run scored, while Ostaszewski was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
The Hawks are back in action next weekend as they host George Mason in a three-game series starting Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
