Outscoring Columbia 14-7 in overtime, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team earned a 68-61 victory over the Lions on Thursday evening at Hagan Arena. Senior Alyssa Monaghan led three Hawks in double figures with a team-high 16 points as SJU picked up its second consecutive win to improve to 3-4 on the season.
After the Lions (2-5) rallied from an eight-point deficit to force overtime, Saint Joseph's took control in the extra frame with a 7-2 run as a putback layup by Katie Mayock made it 61-56 with 1:44 to play.
Columbia twice cut the Hawks' lead to three, but SJU closed out the win going 5-of-8 from the foul line over the final 30 seconds.
Down 33-25 early in the third quarter, Saint Joseph's chipped away at Columbia's lead to tie the game at 40-40 on a three-pointer by Katie Jekot with 1:37 left in the third quarter.
Entering the fourth quarter down just 42-41, the Hawks carried their momentum with them as they ran out to an 9-0 run with Kristalyn Baisden making it 50-42 on a pair of free throws at 4:50.
The Lions rallied though to force overtime as a layup by Riley Casey in the final seconds tied the game at 54 all.
For the game, the Hawks shot 34.9 percent from the floor (22-of-63), went 11-of-33 from behind the arc and 13-of-19 from the foul line (68.4 percent). Saint Joseph's also converted 24 Columbia turnovers into 26 points.
Individually, Monaghan finished with 16 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals, while Baisden added 14 points and three assists. Jekot was the third Hawk in double figures finishing with 13 points and four steals with Mayock grabbing a team-best 10 rebounds and adding four steals, two assists and a blocked shot.
Sienna Durr led two Lions in double figures with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Columbia finished the night going 25-of-60 from the field (41.7 percent), but went just 3-of-17 from behind the arc (17.6 percent) and 8-of-13 from the foul line (61.5 percent).
The Hawks return to action Sunday with a Big 5 matchup versus Villanova at 2 p.m. at Hagan Arena.
