The Saint Joseph's softball team blanked St. Bonaventure, 4-0, in the Hawks' season finale on Sunday at the SJU Softball Field.
With Sunday's win, Saint Joseph's earned a series sweep of the Bonnies to finish the season at 24-25 overall and won nine of its last 11 conference games to finish 11-12 in the Atlantic 10.
On the day, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a St. Bonaventure throwing error during a steal attempt. With runners at the corner, Sarah Ostaszewski broke for second, drawing a throw from the Bonnies' catcher. Cutting off the throw, St. Bonaventure's second baseman tried to catch Kapala off the base at third, only to overthrow her target and allowing Kapala to easily score.
Going back and forth in a pitchers' duel, Saint Joseph's Ashley Ventura and St. Bonaventure's Josie Borysevicz held each team's offense to a minimum over the next four innings.
Ahead by one, the Hawks finally got to Borysevicz in the sixth as they added three insurance runs to open a 4-0 edge. In her final at-bat as a Hawk, senior Lauren Reilly singled to right field to score Amanda Kulp to make it 2-0. A sacrifice fly by Taylor Marinelli scored Ostaszewski, while Stacey Mayer singled home Reilly to push the advantage to four.
Turning to Chelsea Evans for the final two innings, the SJU rookie got the job done as she held the Bonnies scoreless to pick up her second save of the year.
Ventura, who allowed just three hits over five innings in the win, finished the season with a 13-15 mark.
At the plate, Mayer was 2-for-3 with a run driven in, while Reilly, Kulp, Ostaszewski and Kapala accounted for the other four SJU hits on the day.
