CLEARWATER, Fla. - Junior Ashley Ventura tossed a complete-game shutout and classmate Amanda Kulp collected the game-winning RBI and made a highlight-reel catch in the seventh to lead the Saint Joseph's softball team to a 1-0 victory over Robert Morris on the final day of the Under Armour Showcase on Sunday.
After a scoreless first inning, Ventura ran into trouble in the top of the second as Robert Morris loaded the bases with one out. Ventura worked out of the jam though getting back-to-back strike outs to retire the Colonials.
With the game tied at 0-0, the Hawks broke through with the lone run of the contest as a single by Kulp in the bottom of the fifth scored Lauren Reilly to make it 1-0.
Heading to the top of the seventh ahead by one, Ventura got a strike out to start the inning. Looking to tie the game with one swing, Robert Morris' Madison Riggle drilled a deep shot to centerfield, only to have the ball robbed at the wall by a leaping Kulp to keep the Hawks on top.
Ventura followed with an infield pop out to secure the victory.
For the game, Ventura scattered five hits over seven innings and struck out six to improve to 4-3 on the season. Kulp went 1-for-3 with the run batted in, while Taryn Grober went 2-for-3.
The Hawks (8-7) are back in action at the Michele Smith-Clearwater Parks and Rec Spring Tournament on Friday starting with a 2 p.m. matchup with Florida A&M.
