LYNCHBURG, Va. – Members of the Saint Joseph’s men’s tennis team took to the courts at Liberty University on Friday as the 2017 ITA Atlantic Regionals continued. Sophomore Beekman Schaeffer and freshman Johnnie Massart advanced in the doubles draw to highlight the day for the Hawks.
Schaeffer and Massart won their main doubles draw opener, 8-7 (5), over Carter Bradford and Jakob Nielsen of George Mason, and will see action in the round of 32 on Saturday morning.
Massart was also a winner in the singles consolation draw, taking a 7-5, 6-0, result from Hampton’s Fedor Shirin. Senior Dan Tan claimed a win in the consolation draw as well, cruising past Dane Bendel of Duquesne, 6-1, 6-1.
Elsewhere in the main doubles draw, Tan and senior Peter Dewitt fell to a duo from James Madison, 8-2; senior Tim Stierle and junior Michael Santa Lucia went down, 8-6, to a pair from Duquesne; and junior Andre Fick and sophomore Luis Janko suffered an 8-5 defeat at the hands of an entry from Delaware.
In the singles draw, Schaeffer went the distance with Georgetown’s Connor Lee before falling, 3-6, 7-6 (0), 6-4; Dewitt fell to George Washington’s William Tutecky, 6-1, 6-2; and Stierle went down to Lars de Boer of William & Mary, 6-4, 6-4. Janko was in action as well, falling to Maxim Borcuti of Liberty in a consolation match, 6-2, 6-0.
Play continues on Saturday with the second round of the doubles draw and consolation matches in both singles and doubles.
