LYNCHBURG, Va. – Five members of the Saint Joseph’s men’s tennis team took part in the singles qualifying draw at the 2017 ITA Atlantic Regionals held at Liberty University on Thursday.
Juniors Andre Fick and Michael Santa Lucia were winners in the opening round of the qualifying draw, as Fick topped Temple’s Michael Haelen, 6-3, 6-3, and Santa Lucia slipped past Rogelio Gonzalez of La Salle, 6-2, 7-6 (6).
Santa Lucia later fell in the second round, 6-2, 7-5, to Ryan Kros of Virginia Tech, while Fick went down in three sets, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2, to Georgetown’s Ian Witmer.
In first round action, senior Dan Tan fell to Alexander Poynter of Liberty, 6-2, 7-6 (6), sophomore Luis Janko went down, 7-6 (4), 6-2, to George Mason’s Carter Bradford, and freshman Johnnie Massart suffered a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Connor Merrill of La Salle.
Seniors Peter Dewitt and Tim Stierle and sophomore Beekman Schaeffer were drawn into the opening round of the main singles draw and will commence play on Friday. The doubles draw will also kick off on Friday morning as well.
