EASTON, Pa. - Sophomore Colin Gallagher won the Leopard Invitational 8k race and the Saint Joseph's men's cross country squad put seven Hawks in the top 10 to dominate the competition and to place first as a team in a field of four squads at Lafayette's Metzgar Fields on Saturday morning. SJU totaled 16 points on the day and an average 8k time of 27:03, defeating runner-up, host-school Lafayette by 47 points.

Gallagher crossed the finish line in 26:52.5 to place first in a field of 47 runners.

Senior Andrew Myers (26:55.7) and junior Will Sponaugle (26:57.7) also posted sub-27:00 performances for second and third overall, respectively.

Rookie Matthew Scarpill turned in the top performance by a freshman, crossing in 27:06.6 for fourth, while sophomore John Walker rounded out SJU's scoring with a sixth-place finish in 27:24.1.

Juniors Shawn Hutchison (7th, 27:27.0) and Justin Branco (8th, 27:28.0) finished as SJU's #6 and #7 runners.

Saint Joseph's begins championship season in two weeks, when the Hawks head to the 2017 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championship, to be held at the Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Va. on Saturday, October 28. The five-mile race, in which the Hawks were predicted to finish fifth as a squad, is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m.
