MERION STATION - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis opened play with four teams playing in the doubles brackets at the 2017 SJU Invitational on Friday.

In the first doubles flight, Maureen Devlin and Amanda Nava teamed for an 8-4 victory, while Isis Gill-Reid and Laura Gomez posted an 8-1 win in their opening match.

Unfortunately for both SJU pairs, they eached dropped their quarterfinal matches, 8-3.

In the second doubles flight, the teams of Iswarya Vel and Madison Chontos, and Katherine Devlin and Madeline Hill both put up strong fights. Chontos and Vel fell 8-2 in their opening match and dropped a heart-breaking 9-7 match in the consolation bracket. On the other side of the draw, Devlin and Hill fell in their opener, 8-4 and lost in the consolation quarterfinals, 8-4.

Singles play begins on Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. at both the SJU Tennis Complex and Finnesey Courts.
