BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Tommy Higley placed 34th in a field of 370 finishers to lead the Saint Joseph’s men’s cross country squad to a fifth-place team finish in a field of 20 in the 8k Brown Race of the 2017 Paul Short Run on Friday afternoon. The Hawks totaled 144 points in the race, which was hosted by Lehigh University at the Goodman Campus.

Higley crossed the finish line in a collegiate-best time of 25:14. The time is an improvement of Higley’s previous 8k PR (25:40.1), set last season, by over 25 seconds.

Rookie Matthew Scarpill crossed next for the Hawks in 25:29, good for 54th overall, in his first collegiate 8k.

Sophomore Colin Gallagher (25:56) and senior Andrew Myers (26:04) finished 105th and 124th, respectively, while freshman Brendan Price rounded out the scoring with a 134th-place finish (26:10 PR).

Sophomore Antonio Amaral (158th, 26:20 PR) and freshman Dan Mink (186th, 26:33 PR) finished as SJU’s #6 and #7 runners.

Junior John Podles led all Hawks in the 8k Open Race with a time of 26:00, good for 75th in a field of 336. Podles destroyed his previous 8k PR (27:51.5) by nearly two entire minutes in the fastest 8k performance of his collegiate career. Freshman Bobby Hastie (89th, 26:12 PR), senior Jake Durante-Koller (112th, 26:27 PR), senior Kevin Dorsey (130th, 26:36), and freshman Jimmy Macpherson (153rd, 27:00 PR) rounded out SJU’s top five.

Select Hawks are set to race George Mason Invitational tomorrow, September 30, to be hosted by George Mason University at the Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Va. beginning at 10:45 a.m. This race will give the Hawks an opportunity to race the course of the upcoming 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship.
