TOWSON, Md. - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team opened its 2017-18 campaign with six victories in the first day of play at the Towson Tiger Classic on Saturday.
Opening the day against Loyola Maryland, the Hawks picked up four wins in their five matches.
In singles matches, Maureen Devlin, Katherine Devlin and rookie Madeline Hill each earned wins. Maureen Devlin was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Amanda Lanciano, while Katherine Devlin battled to a 6-3, 0-6, 10-4 victory against Lin Robertson. Hill picked up SJU's third win coming back to take a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 decision over Nicole Eberle.
In the nightcap versus Morgan State, Gill-Reid and Nava again picked up wins, this time on the singles side as the Hawks took two of five matches.
Gill-Reid was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Dana Santiago, while Nava topped Oriane Yehouenou, 6-3, 6-2.
"We are learning what we need to work on. What breaks down under pressure needs to be corrected or changed," said Saint Joseph's head coach Ian Crookenden.
The format for this weekend's tournament do not count towards team results.
The Hawks cap play on Sunday with matches set against Mount St. Mary's and host Towson.
