CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. – Freshman Quinn Maguire scored the first two goals of her collegiate career on Friday, the second an overtime winner, as the Saint Joseph's field hockey team topped Villanova, 2-1, at the Villanova Field Hockey Field.

Just over two minutes into the overtime period, junior Anna Willocks cut into the arc from the right side and sent a pass straight across the front of the cage.  The pass was weighted perfectly and Maguire one-timed the shot past VU's Erika Miller and into the cage for the winner.

“It was another reminder to pass and move and do the simple things,” head coach Lynn Farquhar said of the game's final sequence.

Villanova (0-3) opened the scoring on a corner with 14:34 to go in the first half as Lydia Sydnor netted her first goal of the season.

After a slow start, Saint Joseph's (2-1) equalized shortly after halftime as Maguire maneuvered through the Villanova defense in the circle and scored her first collegiate goal with 28:53 remaining.

The Hawks dominated the run of play in the second half, holding the Wildcats to a single shot, but could not find a winner in regulation.  The Hawks were forced to kill off the final seconds of a green card to start the extra period but quickly took the play toward the Villanova cage, culminating in Maguire's game-winning goal.

“The great thing about Division I hockey and the opponents we face from different conferences are a variation of playing styles that we're going to see,” Farquhar said, “so our number one focus has to be on ourselves.  We still need to strengthen the core foundation of our game and be ready to problem-solve in the moment.

“That comes from energy, it comes from playing to our strengths, and it comes from performance in training transitioning to what we do in a match,” she continued.  “It took us a half to adjust to an energized Villanova squad.  There were some really close goal-scoring opportunities that we didn't capitalize on, and had to regroup our focus. It took us until the second half to figure it out.”

The Hawks will play their first home game of the season on Sunday when they host Drexel.  Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
