Women's Lacrosse Falls to #16 UMass, 13-8, in A-10 Semifinals

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Hawks held the 16th-ranked and seven-time defending Atlantic 10 champion Minutewomen (17-1) to their fourth-lowest goal total of the season, but the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team ultimately fell to Massachusetts, 13-8, in the A-10 Championship semifinals at Duquesne University's Arthur J. Rooney Athletic Field on Friday afternoon.

Saint Joseph's finishes its season at 9-10 overall, turning in the second-highest, single-season win total in program history, and 7-2 in the Atlantic 10 regular season, marking the most single-season league wins in program history.

Freshman midfielder Rebecca Lane (2g, 1a), junior attacker Nora McCallion (1g, 2a), and junior midfielder Maggie Egan (3a) paced the Hawks with three points each while junior attacker Sarah Smith and sophomore midfielder Aly Gormley matched a team-high two goals each.

"UMass is a talented team, and I'm proud of my team for competing for 60 minutes and executing our game plan," said head coach Alex Kahoe following the game. "Although the outcome was disappointing, I am so proud of our team for today's effort and what was accomplished this season. I want to thank our seniors for their leadership in helping and leaving a legacy."

Down 1-0 early after UMass' Hannah Murphy scored off the draw just 11 seconds into the game, McCallion drew a foul inside the eight-meter. Set up for the free-position shot, the junior attacker found a cutting Lane right in front of the net, and the A-10 Rookie of the Year put away her first of the day to even the score, 1-1, at the 26:24 mark.

UMass scored the next two (23:41, 20:28), but senior goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin stopped the scoring on her first of many point-blank, first-half saves at the 18:08 mark to keep the Hawks at a two-goal differential.

McCallion factored into SJU's next two back-to-back goals, first assisting on sophomore midfielder Aly Gormley's first of the day with 16:05 to play in the first.

Giblin then once again denied UMass on the other end of the field to keep the Hawks within one, and on the other end, Lane found McCallion on a wrap-around goal as the junior's team-leading 50th goal of the season equalized the score, 3-3, at 11:13.

The Minutewomen then tore off on a game-changing four-goal run to jump ahead, 7-3, with 5:22 remaining in the first half.

Gormley tucked away an unassisted score (2:22) to bring the Hawks to within three, 7-4, entering the halftime break.

UMass scored three of the first four goals to start the second half to extend its lead by five, 10-5, by the 19:23 mark; after the first two goals, Smith converted on a perfect dish from Egan (25:53) for the Hawks' fifth goal of the game.

The Hawks continued to battle by scoring two of the next three goals, with Egan turning in her 32nd and school-record 33rd assists on scores by senior midfielder Mallory Grey (14:25) and Smith (7:45) to close the deficit to four goals, 11-7.

UMass would take control from that point, extending its lead back out to five, 12-7, at the 5:47 mark before scoring its 13th and final goal with 42 seconds to play.

The Hawks fought for the full 60:00, as Lane tallied her fifth goal of the tournament and 36th of the season with two ticks on the scoreboard to close out the scoring.

For the game, UMass owned a 27-20 advantage in shots, with Saint Joseph's earning a 14-10 second-half edge. The Hawks won the ground ball battle 21-17, but the Minutewomen dominated from the draw, earning a 16-6 advantage, including an 11-1 first half.

In her 64th and final career game, senior defender Caroline Hagan matched a career-high five ground balls, while junior defender Megan Tracy registered a team-high two caused turnovers. In addition to her three assists, Egan turned in a team-high two draw controls.

Giblin (9-10) made seven saves in the full 60:00 of her final game in net for the Crimson and Gray.
