Box Score Freshman Rebecca Lane and senior Mallory Grey scored three goals apiece as fourth-seeded Saint Joseph's defeated fifth-seeded Davidson, 10-7, in an Atlantic 10 Quarterfinal game at Duquesne's Rooney Field. The Hawks advance to meet top-seeded Massachusetts in the semifinals on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
HIGHLIGHTS
It is Saint Joseph's first win in A-10 Championship play since 2009, and just its second all-time. It is also the Hawks' first appearance in the A-10 Tournament since that season.
The 2016 A-10 Rookie of the Year, Lane tallied her third at 13:58 of the second half to give SJU a 7-4 lead. The man-up and free position goal ended a nearly 30-minute Saint Joseph's scoring drought while stopping a string of three straight scores by Davidson.
Grey scored two goals in the final 10 minutes after Davidson twice cut its deficit to two goals. Her final goal at 5:50 put the game out of reach and secured the win.
Junior Nora McCallion added two goals on the day for the Hawks while Lane had three assists and Grey posted two assists. Senior goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin made eight saves on the day.
"I'm so proud of this team. They've worked so hard to get here. It's taken a lot of blood, sweat and tears, but also a lot of laughter and excitement. I think all of those things combined really helped to motivate our team and play Saint Joseph's lacrosse," said second-year head coach Alex Kahoe.
The Hawks took an early 3-0 lead as Lane opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 28:35. Gray followed with a goal assisted by Lane and Sarah Smith tallied one at 25:11 before play was suspended due to lightning in the area.
SJU didn't lose a step after the half-hour delay and scored its fourth when the teams resumed play as McCallion tallied at 20:36 with the assist from Lane.
Davidson broke the shutout and got one past Giblin with a goal at 18:53 by Lucy Sexton, but SJU still led 5-1.
McCallion notched her second of the contest at 15:05 with Kate Payne picking up the assist. Lane also tallied her second at 13:22 to run the Hawks' lead up to 6-1, but that would be SJU's final goal of the half.
The Wildcats added one more in the first half, converting a free position goal at 11:50 by Annie Brockett, and the Hawks led, 6-2, at halftime.
Davidson opened the second half with a score at 25:50 by Brockett, followed by one from Sexton at 19:14 to pull within 6-4, before Lane gave the Hawks a 7-4 cushion.
Davidson's Paige Farrar added a free position goal at 11:46 but the Hawks answered with a tally by Grey at 10:38. The Wildcats followed with a free position goal from Brocket at 8:06 to again pull within two, 8-6, before Grey added her third and secured the win.
Hayley Sabol closed out the scoring for the Hawks with a man-up goal with 31 seconds remaining.
Davidson scored its final goal of the game with 1.4 seconds to play.
On Friday's meeting with UMass, Kahoe said, "The spring season prepared us for this. We played on Fridays and Sundays and it's a quicker turnaround than that, but I think they understand how quick the turnaround needs to be. We're enjoying the moment now but they know that we'll need to get back to work and they have a job to do, and they'll be ready to keep working hard."
