Men's Tennis Eases Past Saint Peter's, 5-2

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team made quick work of the doubles point and won the last four singles flights en route to a 5-2 win at Saint Peter's on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Peter Dewitt and freshman Dan Tan each came away with a pair of wins for the Hawks.

Dewitt and junior Kyle Chalmers got the Hawks off to a clean start, sweeping their second flight opponents, 6-0. Seniors Renier Moolman and Andres Urrea then secured the point with a 6-4 win in the top flight before Tan and fellow freshman Andre Fick polished off the doubles portion of the match with a 6-2 win in the third.

In the third singles flight, Dewitt rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jon Paredes before Tan extended the match lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 result over Gabe Russotto in the fourth.

Saint Peter's clawed back into the match with wins in the first and second flights, but senior Sam Cadwell secured the victory in the fifth flight, going the distance for a hard-fought 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 come-from-behind win against Doug Nover. Sophomore Nick Ringle then finished off the proceedings, dominating Cuong Lam to the tune of a 6-2, 6-0 score.

“After securing the doubles point, our top two players were rested and Sam and some of the younger players were given an opportunity to carry the day,” said head coach Ian Crookenden after the match. “Sam played extremely well to turn his match around, and it was fitting that his third-set win clinched the match.”

“Good showings from sophomores Peter and Nick, plus a strong outing from Dan shows that the team has the depth required to assist whenever necessary,” he said.

With the win, the Hawks improved to 3-1 in dual match play, while the Peacocks fell to 1-7.

Saint Joseph's hits the courts for matches on three consecutive days this weekend as the Hawks host Quinnipiac on Friday and Monmouth on Saturday before traveling to Delaware on Sunday.
